Four Eyes

When I was in 3rd grade, I started wearing glasses (and braces and a bra, but that's a different story) For 22 years now, I haven't been able to see on my own. In fact for probably about the last 10 I have been close to legally blind without my glasses or contacts. I've been told by eye doctors they didn't have a chart high enough to rate my uncorrected vison. I spent a large amount of time in 8th grade with only one conctact in my eye because I was afraid to tell my parent's that I lost another contact. I have thrown a pair of glasses across a labor room because they were too sweaty on my face while I was pushing, and I didn't see my newborn son until he was up close. I have nursed and changed diapers without sight, just by touch because I couldn't find my glasses in the darkness of the night. I forgot what it was like to wake up in the morning and just be able to see without fumbling for my glasses. Or to just fall asleep at night without worrying about having to take out my contacts. Or even what is like to wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom or get some water while being able to see. In fact I've learned to do the latter with my eyes just closed. What was the point, I couldn't see anyway.

What's the point of my rambling, you ask? On this past Thursday, it all changed for me. I got LASIK eye surgery. It only took 4 minutes for the last 22 years of "blindness" to be erased. I now have 20/20 vision. All on my own. I sat up from the table able to see and I started crying and thanking the doctor. I think it's hard for people who can see perfectly to understand what it really means. No more four eyes for me. Just my two!
